Hidden Meadows at Snowmass Creek
Snowmass, Colorado

WHAT:

Over the river and through the woods is a lodge that rivals Yellowstone or Glacier in its historic detail and soulfulness. Air so still, you hear only the rushing of Snowmass Creek. More park than garden, with multi-layered perennials that will stun the seasoned plantsman. Adirondack and Mission styles merge into a thousand details infused with mystery, artful surprise and gentrified elegance. A room for every mood, every activity, every one. (Chefs ask to cook here.) More than an estate, it’s your own piece of America.
WHERE:

There is, of course, a reason they call it Hidden Meadows. This is a part of Old Snowmass the world hasn’t found. The drive in is so full of natural visions, it’s been designated a scenic road by the county. Cross the creek, prepare to be captivated.
WHY:

The American Lodge comes of age, along with a community-sized back porch and private river frontage (rainbows, brookies and browns) on 5 acres, as varied and nurtured as our finest national park. You’ll appreciate the little things. Like the naturally cooled 600-bottle wine cellar. The indoor potting room. His and Her office. Caution: Repeated visits may be required to take in the depth of beauty here.

INTERIOR FEATURES

Finish features throughout include cherry flooring and cabinetry, fir and cedar ceilings, solid fir doors and trim, faux-painted walls, extensive use of flagstone, granite, marble and travertine, various iron or antler chandeliers chosen to match every room’s personality, Conran blinds, screen doors with antler handles and each with their own distinct wood animal carvings, and a sound system designed to provide music to every room in the house.
Walk through the front door and into a flagstone entry foyer to be greeted by a magnificent two-story high great room and huge windows which frame one of the many gardens and Mt. Daly in the distance. In addition to the living room on the main level, there is also a dining room, kitchen with breakfast table and informal TV sitting area, a den/4th bedroom with bath, a huge mudroom, powder room, and an indoor “potting shed” room for flower-arranging and projects, plus a 3-car garage.
The great room has burnished cherry floors, a majestic floor-to-ceiling, drystack stone, woodburning fireplace, and a huge antler chandelier. French doors lead to a cedar deck which runs the entire length of the west side of the house.
The dining room, just offset from the great room, also features cherry flooring, a wall of paned windows and a rusted iron and crystal chandelier. Ideal for a party of 8. Adjacent is a cabinet housing CD storage and the sound system which pipes music throughout the home.
The kitchen, designed by owners who love to cook and entertain, is generous and extremely well-planned. It features cherry cabinetry with leaded glass fronts, granite counters with tile backsplashes, a center island with 4 upholstered barstools and storage cabinets below, shelving for hundreds of cookbooks, and two stainless sinks, each with its own window on the beautiful grounds outside. There is also access from the kitchen to the
west-facing deck and a whole other living area which features a shaded dining area and a gas DCS barbeque grill (included in the purchase price).
Kitchen appliances include: 2 Miele dishwashers, a warming drawer, a KitchenAid ice maker and trash compactor, a Viking professional 6-burner gas range with rusted metal hood and spaghetti pot faucet, a custom-paneled SubZero refrigerator/freezer, and a GE Profile Spacesaver microwave.
Also in the kitchen area is the breakfast table which is illuminated by a wrought-iron chandelier and early morning sunshine through three walls of paned windows. There is also a small sitting area for watching television and kibbutzing with the cook. Adjacent to the kitchen is a butler’s pantry and second refrigerator/freezer (GE Profile), as well as a large china cabinet with silver storage. This arrangement makes the home ideal for entertaining, either on your own or with caterers who can come and go freely without disturbing your guests. Easy access from the 3-car garage just beyond and on same level.
Adjacent to the kitchen, there is one of the better-designed mudrooms we’ve seen with travertine floors, a long cushioned bench, plenty of cubbies, two big closets and a powder room which features a custom-designed, tiled leaf inlay in the floor. The east end of the mudroom is highlighted by sandblasted, windowed doors which access the front yard and the vegetable gardens. The west end of the mudroom has a door which accesses the deck and spa.
One of our favorite rooms is the indoor “potting shed”, adjacent to the mudroom and the garage, which, with its two walls of windows and a sink, is a perfect place to arrange the flowers cut from all the surrounding gardens.
Also on the main level is a study/fourth bedroom which features southeast sunshine, a writing desk, to-the-ceiling bookshelves, and some of the best windowed views of the flower gardens outside. A beautiful place to write a thoughtful letter.
A charming, pine log staircase leads from the great room to the upper level. A bridged, open hallway overlooks the living and dining rooms. At the southeast end of the house is the guest master suite, an Adirondack-style corner room with exposed log walls, its own windowed ¾-bath, and a private balcony with French doors sited above the gardens, and facing the meadow and Elk Mountains beyond.
The jewel of the upper level is the master suite with its vaulted wood ceilings, cherry flooring, and beautifully-designed gas fireplace. A wall of operable, paned windows overlooks the meadow below and Snowmass Creek beyond. Every night, you’ll be soothed to sleep by the sounds of the river.
The huge master bath features antique fir floors, dual limestone vanities with cherry cabinetry, nickel Waterworks fixtures, a wall of mirrors, a deep Jacuzzi tub with a private view of the meadow through walls of windows, and a generously-sized Waterworks shower for two with waterfall showerhead. There is also a water closet with linen storage.
Adjacent is an enormous walk-in closet with built-in dressers, a window overlooking the meadow from a cushioned bench, and a vaulted wood ceiling.
Also on the upper level is an office, affectionately called “The Tower” by the owners, with two workspaces, built-in library shelving, cabinets and file drawers, and two walls of windows overlooking the grounds.
Down the hall is a guest bedroom, perfect for two extra-long twins or a queen, with windows framing a beautiful view of the Snowmass Creek valley. Adjacent is a well-designed, tiled ¾ bath with two separate standing Forest Green marble vanities and another window framing the north view.
There is a media room on the upper level which can be closed off from the rest of the house with beautiful wood-and-windowed pocket doors. Framed by three sides of windows which show off the views, this is one of the best rooms in the house in which to relax, especially in the winter, when afternoon sunshine fills the space. This entertainment area features a huge wide-screen TV with surround sound, a wet bar with sink and refrigerator, and high vaulted ceilings with exposed wood beams.
Off the media room is a large sunny deck overlooking the meadow and Snowmass Creek. A great place to sunbathe in private, read or nap.
Also on the upper level is an Adirondack-style powder room and a laundry room. These areas, plus the media room, guest room and office, as well as the master suite, can all be accessed by a separate stairwell which begins in the mudroom.
On the lower level, there is a workshop for every conceivable project (i.e., gift-wrapping, fly-tying, puzzles and games), a large laundry room and a 600-bottle wine cellar which, because of its location, remains at a constant, cool temperature of around 55 degrees.
There are two mechanical rooms on the lower level, one for a Culligan water conditioning system and water storage tanks (for fire protection), and another which features the furnace and radiant heat system. A gigantic water heater insures hot water throughout the house, all the time.

EXTERIOR FEATURES

Arrive at this home by crossing a picturesque wood bridge over a roaring Snowmass Creek and via a scenic and charming rural drive. A winding flagstone pathway, lined with fragrant lavender bushes, takes the visitor from the circular drive to the front door, framed by stone pillars.
Spectacular perennial flower gardens, designed by Julia Marshall of Mt. Daly Enterprises, surround the home and are in bloom from spring until fall. Tall stands of oak shrub trees and pockets of lawn dotted with a few beautiful lichen-covered boulders, plus a hammock, create various sheltered outdoor mini-sanctuaries.
An entire “outdoor room” exists on the southwest-facing cedar deck which runs the length of the home: multiple seating areas and an outdoor dining area with gas BBQ mean many an afternoon and evening will be spent out here watching the sun go down and various forms of wildlife (fox, marmot, deer) wandering through the meadow below.
A hot tub unobtrusively sits amongst the oak shrub trees which envelope it as a private spa area.
Two raised, boxed-in vegetable gardens sit in the sunshine, near the kitchen. Nearby is one of the fancier dog houses and kennel you’ll ever see for the family retriever.
There is over 250 feet of Snowmass Creek frontage with multiple picnic spots and fishing holes amidst tall stands of spruce, pine and cottonwood. The creek is accessed via a bark-covered path which winds through the meadow below the house. The river area is completely private and secluded.

ADDITIONAL REMARKS

By covenants recently amended, horses are not permitted.
The owners of Hidden Meadows, Lot 3, also own the vacant building site to the north of the house, Lot 2, and would consider selling it to the buyer of Lot 3 in a separate negotiation. Lot 2 also has its own well.
